EL-GOLI
El-Goli (or Shah Goli meaning the king’s pool) is one of the main attractions of Tabriz. It is a historic park with an artificial lake. The lake was once the largest water reservoir serving irrigation needs in the east of Tabriz. The reservoir was later turned into a lake in the Safavid era.
The two-story octagonal pavilion in the center of the lake is now a prestigious hangout for locals. It is the perfect place for those looking to spend a relaxing evening or enjoy a great meal. The pavilion was originally built for Sultan Yakup, a ruler of the Aq Qoyunlu dynasty (also known as white sheep Turkomans). The dynasty was a tribal confederation that ruled present-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, eastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, and northern Iraq from 1378 to 1501.
Safavid rulers expanded the pool which acquired its present form during the rule of Qajar crown prince Abbas Mirza. During the Pahlavi era, Tabriz Municipality ruined the old brick pavilion and built the stunning monument we can see today. They also built a pathway to connect the island-like pavilion to the sidewalks that ring the lake.
El-Goli sits within an enchanting well-manicured garden with lofty trees and colorful rose bushes. The building is a magnificent spectacle on every side. It is a beautiful place which can win your heart and soul throughout all four seasons.
