Nader Shah Afshar
Nader Shah’s tomb is the second most important historical attraction of Mashhad. Many historians believe Nader Shah (1688-1747), was the most powerful ruler of post-Islamic Iran. He is also the founder of the Afsharid dynasty. Some have even described him as the Second Alexander or the Napoleon of Persia.
He assumed the power in Iran at the time of chaos and reformed the army. Nader Shah scored a series of brilliant victories, significantly expanding Iran’s territory. He created an Iranian empire that stretched from the Indus River to the Caucasus Mountains.
He ordered the construction of a small tomb for himself near the holy shrine of Imam Reza. The tomb was originally a mud-and-brick one but later in the Qajar era a new tomb was built for him to honor his efforts.
Nader shah’s tomb is in a garden in downtown Mashhad. It consists of 12 stone tiers and his statue, which displays him riding a horse with an ax in his hands. Visitors can see the statue on the entrance path.
In addition to the tomb, there are two museums in the garden. One of the museums exhibits ancient warfare and weapons through ages. The other one showcases Nader Shah’s personal objects and weapons.
