Tehran is situated within the historical reign of media in northwestern iran . by the time of median empire apart of territory of present day tehran was suburb of prominent city of ( Rhages) , ( old persian Raga ) . (persian : Ray ) more fully

shahr – e – ray . tehran northmost limits of the city stand at about 1700 meter above sea level and the southern most limits about 1100 meter , so the distance beween northern hights and the southorn edges is around 30 kilo meter.

Tehran was the first choosen as the capital of iran by Agha mohammad khan founder of the Qajar dynasty in 1796 . Tehran`s most famous land marks include the Azadi tower a memorial built under the reign of Mohammad reza shah of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1971 , to make the 2500 years of foundation of the imperial state of iran , and the milad tower the worlds six tallest self supporting tower which was completed in 2007 . people of tehran speak in persian but there are large population of other ethno linguistic groups who speak persian as a second language . Tehran is the capital city of iran and the center of Tehran province which is located in north central iran at the foot of alborz mountain range . since it`s establishment as the capital city Tehran has grown from a small city to major metropolis , situated in urban region of 12 million inhabitants , Tehrn is iran`s largest city and one of the most populous cities of the world . tehran nowadays is the political , cultural , economic and commercial center of iran . the formal religion of people is islam with additional religious comunities of christian , jewish , and zoroastrain minorities . tehran has an international airport ( Imam khomeini airport ) IKA and domestic airport (mehrabad ) , a central railway station , the rapid transit system of metro , a bus rapid transit system , a large network of highways . Tehran has hot arid climate , the annual average temprature in Tehran is 17 degrees , with an average annual high of 23 degrees and annual lows averaging about 12 degrees . extreme temprotunes can reach a maximum of 43 degrees in the summer and minimum (-15) degrees in the winter .

Tehran province has a hydro dams as well as two natural lakes providing the water supply of tehran and province .due to excessive snowfall in the northern areas of the province during the winter season the Alborz mountain forms an excellent environment for winter sport such as skiing , dizin , SHemshak , and tochal are the most popular skiing resort .half of iran`s industry is based in Tehran .industries include the manufacturing automobiles , electronics and electrical equipment military weoponry , textiles , sugar , cement an chemical products .
